Roanoke County DSS Building

In 2011, Roanoke County retained Thompson & Litton (T&L) to provide a Needs Assessment for the expansion of the Roanoke County Department of Social Services (DSS) area within the Salem Bank and Trust Building located in downtown Salem, Virginia. The study was performed to determine the suitability of the Salem Bank and Trust Building for use by the DSS to expand and continue its operations or to relocate elsewhere.

Upon completion of the report, T&L was retained by the County to provide architectural, engineering and interior design services related to the long-term utilization of the building.

Project highlights include the following:

  • Since the building had to remain occupied during construction, the project was completed in two (2) phases;
  • Phase I Scope of Work: Roof replacement, HVAC and telecommunications structural systems, parking lot rehabilitation and renovations to the 5th floor of the building;
  • Phase II Scope of Work: Renovations to the remaining four (4) floors of the building as well as both elevators.
  • This phased approach for construction was critical as the completed fifth floor was utilized as swing space for relocation of displaced employees from the other four floors.
