Radford University – Expansion of Parking Lot

T&L partnered with Radford University (RU) on the planning and design of the Fairfax Street Corridor project under an A/E Term Contact. In the summer of 2016, T&L provided RU with the following design deliverables:

  • Conceptual development plans for the west and east end of the project area, with the aim of better defining the visitor entrance and improved parking for a portion of Fairfax Street;
  • Demolition plans for the east end; and
  • DD level plans for the visitor entrance (green space and sidewalks) and additional parking.

RU ultimately utilized contract forces to demolish the buildings and construct the visitor entrance/parking lot on the east end.

RU authorized T&L to proceed with the design of the west end improvements including:

  • Development of construction documents to facilitate further project development including demolition
  • finished site grading,
  • on-site parking / pedestrian facilities
  • ADA accessibility
  • utility (i.e., water, sewer, fiber optic and electric) relocation and repair
  • on-site storm sewer and associated appurtenances

Longwood University – High Street Gateway

Longwood University – High Street Gateway

Longwood University – High Street Gateway

Longwood University hosted a nationally-televised Vice-Presidential debate in October 2016. Because of this, LU made significant campus-wide improvements, consisting of mostly small projects that beautified the campus image; however, there are a few, larger-scale projects that were a part of this effort, including the High Street Gateway project. In association with Franck & Lohsen, T&L served LU as the prime A/E on the High Street Gateway Project.

The project consisted of the following improvements along High Street, which is a high-profile entrance and considered the “front door” of the campus:

  • New brick walkways
  • Replacing the Town light fixtures with campus standard lighting, plantings, architectural elements to define the edge of campus
  • Development of the “Gateway” at the intersection of High Street and the extension of Brock Commons
  • Various utility improvements including stormwater management infrastructure

The University’s vision for the “Gateway” is an iconic landmark or structure that will capture the spirit of Longwood University.

Longwood University – Chichester Roof Replacement

The Chichester Science Center serves Longwood University as the primary facility for education in the sciences. The building is prominently located, fronting High Street and serving as the corner of Wheeler Lawn Quad. LU engaged T&L to provide architectural, structural and mechanical engineering services for the replacement of the building roofing system.

The project consisted of:

  • A complete tear-off of the existing two-ply system
  • Installation of 16,250 square feet of 90-mil EPDM roofing system with rigid insulation, sloped to drain
  • Installation of a lightning protection system.

The project required numerous roofing details and coordination due to the number of roof top units, a greenhouse, and a perimeter mansard roof.

Appalachian School of Pharmacy

Appalachian School of Pharmacy

Appalachian School of Pharmacy

The Appalachian College of Pharmacy, located in Buchanan County, was founded in 2003. The highly successful College operates Virginia’s only three year pharmacy program. The college completed a renovation of Garden Hall in 2007, which provided a gymnasium, Library and Learning Resource Center, student laboratory, faculty research facility, Business Office, Student Affairs Office, Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid Office, student and staff lounges, and the College’s boardroom.

Subsequently, the College elected to design and build a new academic building, McGlothlin Hall, on a site adjacent to Garden Hall. T&L was selected by the College to provide planning, design, bidding, and construction administration services for the new McGlothlin Hall building. Serving as the center of the College’s educational activities, it contains:

  • Two large lecture halls
  • Multiple classrooms
  • Faculty research facility
  • Conference room
  • Academic Affairs Office
  • Office of the Dean
  • Faculty and staff offices
